AFIS in Denmark and Norway
Aerodrome Flight Information Service (AFIS) is used in smaller airports where Air Traffic Control (ATC) is not necessary due to a less demanding infrastructure and a limited traffic load.
The AFIS operators deliver the information that pilots need to fly the aircraft safely and efficiently. In Denmark and Norway we have a long tradition – 60 years to be exact – for using AFIS in small and medium-sized airports with fewer flight operations.
When to use AFIS?
As a rule of thumb, airports with up to 15,000 operations, of which 7,500 are IFR flights, can be handled by AFIS. In airports where the traffic is less complex, the number of operations can even be increased.
In Demark AFIS is certified, controlled and audited by the Danish authorities who work in accordance with Danish and European rules and regulations.

AFIS operators must undergo the same basic training as the Air traffic controller students. This means that AFIS students have to pass the ’Common Core Content Initial Training’ and receive simulator training during their training programme, after which they receive on-the-job training (OJT) at an operational AFIS unit. The duration of the complete training programme is estimated to six months.
The AFIS Operator provides information to pilots about wind and weather conditions, runway conditions and the presence of other aircrafts in the area. In some cases, the information is retrieved from a radar. The AFIS Operator helps pilots with flight plans, coordinates IFR traffic with adjacent units, and retrieves clearance from the Area Control Center (ACC). Learn more about the AFIS training course
AFIS is a safe, flexible and financial worthwhile solution to Air Traffic Control. AFIS can also be combined with ATC.
